Our findings suggest there are differences in risk for ME/CFS depending on the genes inherited. We know that ME sometimes runs in families, which also suggests that genetics can play a role, but it’s just one piece of a much bigger picture that includes things like infections and other environmental factors. So having these genetic differences doesn’t mean that someone will definitely develop ME/CFS, it just means their risk might be slightly higher.
